Sistemele expert sunt soft-uri interactive care folosesc o varietate de elemente de cunoastere (precum date, reguli si modele) intr-o maniera care ajuta si imbunatateste rezolvarea problemelor in diverse domenii. Aceste sisteme reprezinta de obicei cunoasterea intr-o forma simbolica, prin asocierea cu valori numerice care sa reflecte probabilitatea sau certitudinea expertului in ceea ce priveste veridicitatea informatiilor. Strategiile generale de rationament (motor de inferenta) ale sistemului expert, sunt separate de euristica, modele si fapte specifice domeniului (baza de cunostinte). Aceasta separare permite sistemului sa foloseasca cunostintele intr-o multitudine de moduri, ajungand pana la elemente particulare ale bazei cunoasterii si cerand informatii suplimentare, necesare pentru a rezolva o problema anume. In plus, sistemul poate explica rationamentul din spatele acestor intrebari si recomandari, prin raportarea euristica si a datelor folosite pentru a investiga ipoteze si a trage concluzii.
