With reference to theoretical views discuss whether tourism is either desirable or sustainable.

Whether tourism is desired or sustained can only be gathered from opinions of people as it is not a proven point either way. Sustainability can be defined as ‘meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’, this is according to The Bruntland Report.

Several writers have commented on how they feel about tourism and the services it is offering to the public. According to an article written by Malcolm Crick 1989, it talks about how he thinks that tourism has been changed and that it’s been artificially created to meet customer needs. The quote above is talking bout how tourists are not really experiencing real tourism of cultures and societies. The most popular types of holidays are package deals to Europe; this will include flights, hotels and transfers. This type of holiday is a chance for working people to relax and have a break. Some people think that tourism is about adventures and exploration, seeing parts of the world that a person would not have normally.

Sustainability can be divided into subgroups as it is such a wide area. These are economics, environment and socio cultural, as sustainability can be gained from either one of these areas. There may be different definitions of tourism sustainability but the main aim is for the subgroups above not to be adversely affected by the increase in sustainability (Cooper et al 2004).

There are many disadvantages to sustainable tourism which affect the economy we live in. Tourism competes with other industries for the factors of production, which are land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship. Within the labour section, workers from rural areas are attracted towards the tourism industry because of the modern technology and higher wages, meaning that output levels of traditional industries fall....
