Unsportsmanlike Business

Sports are played on so many levels that most people do not see. Many people only see the athlete side of sports, but ignore the extremely profitable business side of it. In 2010 alone the United States sports world made a total of $414 billion dollars overall nationwide. The most profitable sport in America is football with 2010 revenue of $7.8 billion dollars. Major League Baseball comes in 2nd with $6.8 billion, National Basketball Association in 3rd with $4 billion, and the National Hockey League in 4th with 3 billion dollars. In Business there’s always a downfall. Unsportsmanlike Business is not displaying the qualities or behavior befitting a good sport in business. From owners wanting, power, too much greed, too many prima donna personalities, too much unsportsmanlike conduct (Blann, F.). Unsportsmanlike business has been around since the beginning of professional sports. It will continue to be popular within sports because of the many different urges to be more powerful. Unsportsmanlike business will never go away unfortunately. Scandals, Lockouts, strikes, bad sport agents, gambling, and drug use are many sources that can lead to unsportsmanlike business which can have a huge influence on its fans, athletes, and imagined communities. Everything mentioned above can affect how the sports will be played. With that being said how can unsportsmanlike business participate in sports responsibly whether watching or playing? Easy, by having professional sportsmanship, and integrity in sports.

Sports agents are charged with trying to influence college athletes into going professional to early on in their careers. Many sport agents try to make a kid from college or even sometimes from high school leave to join the pros so they can start making money and so the agents get the best deals for them financially and strategically.
