Abstract

This paper will explores the two web addresses that report on drafting in cycling as it relates to the ability of riders to operate their bicycles easier, safer and much faster. The addresses cover the definition of drafting as it is defined in Merriam-Webster dictionary. The Lance Armstrong Foundation (2010) suggests that drafting in most effective when the rider faces different scenarios such as back of the pack, peloton strings or draft lines, echelons and gutter rides. This paper examines not only the viewpoint of the professional rider but also the viewpoint of the novice amateur rider as these techniques are learned and practiced. Drafting in Cycling and the Ability to Ride Easier

The term “drafting is used in so many different contexts nowadays in cycling that it is very hard to reach a definitive answer that pleases everyone. Ordinarily, the term implies the collection of aerodynamics and how it applies to the environment around the rider during the competition. It is common knowledge that when in the heat of competition, the ability to go fast is preferred over the ability to go slow. In other words, the science behind drafting is considered as a strategic tool of the trade and one in which time is saved and energy preserved because it does just that- “It allows you to go fast”. Though viewed by the professional as a needless amateur effort to master, and viewed by the critic as a means of cheating and dirty play; for the champion, the term “Drafting” is a hallowed and respected necessity.
