Psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, mania, anxiety disorder, and tourette syndrome create behaviors or psychological patterns that have a disabling effect on normal psychological, behavioral, and physical functions, and are severe enough that psychiatric therapy or drug treatment is required. The assessment and classification of psychological disorders once was thought to be clear cut and the product of a dysfunctional mind. However, with modern research and biopsychological studies it has been proven that it is actually a dysfunction in the brain or a neuropsychological dysfunction. Although there are subtle differences between the neuropsychological and psychological functions that can influence psychological disorders and brain pathology such as experiential factors (Pinel 2009).

Schizophrenia, also known as the “splitting of the psychic functions” (Pinel 2009) is where the integration of thought, emotions, and actions no longer coincide with one another and each becomes independently chaotic, as well as ones perceptions becoming distorted with hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thoughts. The psychological disorder Schizophrenia usually develops in about one percent of adolescence or young adults and does not discriminate when it comes to gender or race (Pinel 2009). Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder that comes in many forms of complex and diverse symptoms that change with progression of the disease, and can often be misdiagnosed as other psychiatric disorders because often many of the symptoms overlap with other psychological and also with neurological disorders (Pinel 2009).
