One of the most important things a supervisor can do to improve overall effectiveness and productivity in an organization is having a good communication line with all the employees. Having effective communication is the key to helping each person in the work place. Communication is a two-way street. You need to listen to people and engage in conversation. Respond to the employees' phone calls and text messages as soon as possible. Address their concerns and work WITH them.

You don't just let the employees know the principles of fairness. You need show fairness by treating all employees the same. Be specific in how you'll provide flexible work schedules. Be specific in how you'll foster a team spirit. Sometimes the most amazing results arise from appreciating people, respecting them, and treating them fairly.

We employees are a fairly simple bunch of people. We all get paid, that’s nice. But what we all want, but often don’t get, from our managers. We want to be appreciated. We want to be respected. And we want to be treated fairly. Be humble, be genuine. Let the other person tell you how to do his job. Let him be the boss over you. Make the time substantial and dedicated.

Don't allow interruptions during this time. During this time, be happy, positive and say nothing negative. Later on, always refer to this period of time in a positive way. Make sure that the employee understands that they are encouraged and free to explain why and how they do things and what they think is the best way of doing these things.
