After reading this article I learned that McNamara was a business managing genius. He knew what the people wanted out of the companies he worked for, and he knew how to sell it to the people in the right ways. McNamara was a very smart in economics and statistical ideas, and he used this knowledge into learning more about managing businesses and also incorporating his ideas into the businesses he managed. To me it seemed that McNamara was more of a business structure person and he was always trying to find new ways to make the business more successful. I believe that instead of trying to make the workplace better for employees and managers he was always thinking of different ways to either sell the companies product or make the company more structured so it runs better. He did care about the employees but I believe that wasn’t his main focus to improve the company.

Mary Follett’s “organizations as communities” management approach was a great approach to improving the workplace. She believed that the managers and workers should work as one and not have one group dominate the other. This way everyone can work together and make this organization run smoother because all the employees will be happy, thus improving production. McNamara and Follett’s ways of improving a business were not that similar because Follett was more focused on the employee and managers relationship and McNamara was more focus on making decisions for the company and improving ways of selling the product or service to the customers.

Some other types of management approaches were the Hawthorne studies and Maslow’s theory of human needs. The beginning Hawthorne studies tried to determine how economic incentives and physical conditions of the workplace affected the output of workers.
