What is going on?

Imagine that you have an employee in charge of you that is doing very well on his position and has done a positive long-lasting impact into your company. You want to reward him, but you do not know how since he does not have appropriate skills to get promoted and he is earning as much as he can for his position. What would you do?

Alternatives

* Give him money as a reward.

* Promote him to another position.

* Change reward policy to compensate long-lasting positive impact in a company.

* Do nothing.

Motivators

In my opinion it seems that this guy has mainly intrinsic motivators. The reasons are:

* It seems like he really enjoys the work that he is doing.

* He does it really well only for its self-complacency.

* He probably never asked for a promotion.

* He is on his cap of salary for his position. Money probably won’t be a problem.

* He does not need any kind of external recognition. His best recognition is letting him carrying on his job.

Alternatives assessment

Give him money as a reward | Did he ask for it? Probably not. At this point of his career he is not concerned about money. He just does so for passion (self-complacency). He wouldn’t perceive money as a reward.In addition, It wouldn’t be perceived as fair for people that are in the same position than him. Some times long-lasting impacts are pretty subjective. |

Promote him to another position | Big mistake! 1. Does he have asked for it? No 2. Do you think he would keep being motivation in the other position? No 3. Do you think he would perform as well as in his former position? No 4. Do you think he would keep doing its long-lasting impact in the company (train people and look for talent)? Probably not since he is not motivated anymore. 5. You have lost a very well trained and effective guy as a store manager. |

Change reward policy to compensate long-lasting positive impact | Ok, change it, but do not reward this impact with...
