Demonstrative Communication

In order to understand demonstrative communication, we first need to define communication. Communication is the exchanging and giving of information, messages as we talk, signals, or writing. It is when a person is expressing their ideas and the other person is listening to the idea that is being expressed by the person who is talking. Communication can in written or oral and verbal or non-verbal. Verbal communication is spoken words or actual words whereas non-verbal communication is your body language and posture, appearance, facial expressions, haptic, or gestures.

Demonstrative communication includes nonverbal and unwritten communication. We use this form of communication to reinforce verbal communication, even though it can stand and convey messages on its own. Demonstrative communication involves sending and receiving of wordless messages (Nayab 2010). Appearance is a mean of non-verbal communication. Your hair color, hairstyles, color of clothing, or type of clothing is also considered non-verbal communication. Depending on how a person dresses can alter a person’s first impression, judgment, and interpretation of you. Growing up I was always told that first impressions are very important. That is why when going on a job interview or even some religions you are required to dress accordingly. That is the reason that a person can rely on these qualities to reinforce his or her verbal performance. Haptics which is a form of touching is another form of non-verbal behavior. When we are growing up a simple hug or touch showed affection. Touch is important because it can mean so many different emotions. For example a funeral, the type of emotions that is shown is sympathy and other emotions. Another non-verbal communication is eye gaze. This is the one that I use the most.
