1. Analysis of the business based on the information we were given, the SWOT would look as follows for the Pub:

Strengths

 Malachi Murphy has worked at the pub & understands the pub & the business plus has a business degree

 Loyal customer base

 Experienced employees – know customers names & drinks

 Motivated for success

Weaknesses

 Keenans is similar to 90% of other pubs in the area

 Part-time employees hired when needed

 Heated outdoor facility is like the competition

Opportunities

• Unused grocery store space that is owned adjacent to the pub

• Tourist area in the summer

• Food sales increased - attitude toward the pub as a suitable place to eat

• Bar Awards – wanting to be on the list

Threats

 Weak national economy

 High unemployment

 Cross border purchasing of alcohol in N. Ireland

 Price freeze in pubs

2. Advice on what Murphy should do in the future in order to achieve greater profitability

Murphy should take a look at using the unused space next door. By deciding to use the space, he could look to increase revenue. Several different avenues could be taken in order to utilize the space:

 Open up nightclub on weekends to cater to evening crowd as the survey of the licensed premises shows that starting at 9:00pm Friday & Saturday are the busiest times of the day

 Murphy could look at opening a restaurant during the week in the space in order to accommodate crowd that is growing to show that having a meal at the pub is acceptable

 By expanding into the unused space, Murphy can look at bringing in different types of entertainment. He can install a stage in order to provide more live shows. This would set himself apart from the other establishments as they mainly use television/video as entertainment. He could even look at doing an open mic night in order to showcase local talent.

The possibilities with the unused space are endless and up to Murphy’s imagination.
