Misfortunes happen

In the story of “The Necklace” the main character, Mathilde Loisel, puts herself in a situation that she is forced to deal with. Mathilde and her husband aren’t exactly the richest people in the world; in fact they are the opposite of being rich. From the beginning of this story, Mathilde is described as an unhappy woman since she has never been the one to have money to buy nice clothes and things. With that being said, Mathilde brings the misfortune upon herself because she is selfish at times, she worries too much about what others think of her, and is a wishful thinker.

Throughout this story, Mathilde always has a downfall towards anything positive that happens. For an example, when her husband brought home the invitation for the dinner expecting her to be excited, she tosses it down immediately refusing to go because she has nothing nice to wear like what the other ladies will be wearing she says. Mathilde seems selfish because all she tends to worry about is herself and what others will think about her. She not only acts selfish when it comes to her wanting a new dress, but also when she admits to loosing the necklace. Mrs. Loisel blames Mrs. Forrestier for the hard labor she has been through the past ten years paying off the replacement necklace.

Mathilde really shows a lot of worrying when it comes to what others may think of her. She seems to be very self-conscious about not having money to afford nice clothing or jewelry. When Mathilde is explaining to her husband the reason of why they cannot attend the dinner, she compares herself to the others that will be there. She is embarrassed of her lifestyle it seems. All Mathilde talks and thinks about are her wanting to be like the rich ladies with valuable things and looking high class by wearing these expensive things.

From the start of “The Necklace” when they are first introducing Mathilde, it talks about how she thinks she was a rich girl born in the wrong body. She dreams about...
