Meta tags is information that is inserted in the head areas of any Web Page, these tags scan be read by search engines but cannot be seen by the person viewing the page they are in. These tags are put in between the HTML tags of any web page and these tags have many functions such as using a “description” to give a synopsis of the web site or “keyword” to feed the crawlers of search engines such as Yahoo and Google. Meta tags are also used to help gain more traffic that comes to your web page. The more keywords that you use the better the chance you have of more viewers you will get to view your web page.

In the past algorithms used by search engines were not as advanced as they are in today’s world and it was quicker to use fewer resources to look for Meta tags. Programmers added in things like “ROBOTS” in line with a CONTENT value of “NOINDEX” this prevented any search engines from indexing the web page. Meta tags used to be very important in web pages but they are not as useful as they use to be and these tags are no longer being supported by most search engines and have since been considered dead. Many programmers would tell you that it is still ok to use Meta tags but they also caution that Meta tags will not necessarily increase traffic that is coming to your web page. Top search engines like Google and Yahoo ignore Meta tags and uses algorithms to create its own description.

Maintaining professional standards in your web design is something that you need to keep in mind for if you don’t your web page may not be as successful as you had hoped it would. Without guidelines you can have multiple problems with your web page which will cost you time and money to fix. By following these standards you ensure the quality of your web page and that you would not risk copyright issues.
