The WHAT and How to tell
When dealing with various people in the audience you need to consider how much you need to tell them and exactly what it is you are going to be telling them. As with the Chilean mine collapse, you want to keep them up dated and optimistic of the outcome of their friends and family members trapped in the mine. You are dealing with people of a different culture, background, and many different beliefs than your own.
Obviously in any tragic incident the families must be the first to be notified if at all possible and this should be done in a private setting, without public knowledge.. In this particular incident the company had several issues to deal with. I believe the most important of these issues would be how to keep the families of the miners and the other employees of the company calm and reassured
The families of the miners receiving any type of message about their loved ones trapped would need to know the status of their family members well being and that the mining company was doing all it could to reach them as soon as possible. The next issue would be the need to know that their needs were going to be taken care of as well until the miners were reached.
The most efficient way to do this for both co-workers and families of the trapped miners would be to set up an information system, a place where they can get needed information each day with all updates concerning the miners. Inform them of what needs of the miners are being met as they make preparations to reach and remove them from the mine. Reassure them that if they are in need of something every effort will be made to assist. After receiving the information, good or bad, there will be a great need for having physiological recourses available to them to deal with the information they had received.
