Transport Policy

a. What is a Transport Policy?

A transport policy is a set of developed constructs and propositions that are established to achieve particular objectives relating to social, economic and environmental development, and the functioning and performance of the transport system. It is of much importance to the transport system as it improves accessibility, supports economic development, tackles the adverse impact of traffic growth and improves road safety.

b. Outline the major objectives of the Transport Policy of Jamaica

The major objectives of the Jamaica Transport Policy include;

I. To create an environment in which transport is highly efficient and accessible by the improvement of its infrastructure, as a way of assisting key economic and social objectives.

II. To increase Jamaica’s competitiveness in the global environment, through lowering of transport costs.

III. To help foster economic growth, and to underpin continued human development by attracting overseas investments.

IV. To alleviate poverty which is a priority goal of the Government, through the use of an efficient transport system, by providing adequate service to designated areas, which will assist in the reduction of poverty and the provision of employment.

V. Education is also another priority goal of the government and an efficient transport system is a key component to making education readily available to all.

VI. The transport system should also be able to facilitate the development of a thriving rural and agricultural economy.

VII. Transport can make a substantial contribution addressing gender inequality and productivity and promoting social equity.

VIII. To ensure that the policy is supported by interested parties. The Government will lead and coordinate systematic and regular consultation through the entities reporting to the Minister according to their respective roles or directly as applicable.
