1. An employee does an unsatisfactory job on an assigned project.

Explain the attribution process that this person’s manager will use to form judgments about this employee’s job performance.

Attribution theory or process is where when an individual is observing behaviour of the other individual’s and makes an attempt to determine whether it was internally or externally caused. The manager has to use Rational Decision-Making Process where the manager define, identify, allocate, develop, evaluate and select criteria alternatives. In this case of where an employee does an unsatisfactory job on an assigned project, the manager will determine the causes depending largely on the three factors which are distinctiveness, consensus and consistency.

Firstly, the manager needs to clarify the differences between internal and external causation. Internal caused behaviours are those believed to be under the personal control of the individual, for example; wake up late. Whilst, the external caused behaviour is seen as resulting from outside causes, that is the person is seen as having been forced into the behaviour by the situation, for example; traffic jam. As the manager knows the differences between internal and external causation, it will be easier for the manager to distinct the cause of unsatisfactory in the employee’s performance.

Distinctiveness is refers to when an individual displays or portray different behaviour in a different situations which mostly an uncomfortable situation. If the unsatisfactory result of work done by the employee is caused of the external caused, the manager would easily detect it in his/her observant towards the employee’s unusual behaviour. For example, the manager checking the performance of his/her employee on different types of tasks, on one section the employee he/she performed well...
