Introduction

The following observation is an event sample and was carried out on the 21ST of April 2010. This method of observation will allow me to assess whether the child being observed is performing at age related expectations for an average child of her age. The event sample will allow me the opportunity to observe the child participating in activities which require her to use her thinking skills thus allowing me to analyse how well she is performing with regards to her cognitive development. The child in question will be observed throughout the course of the morning whilst participating in both focus led and independent activities. The child being observed is female, aged 5yrs: 2months and of Arabic origin. After obtaining background information from my supervisor I have come to know that child A lives at home with Mum, 1 brother and Grandparents. The observation will be carried out throughout the Early Years setting, following the child and taking note of her actions as and when opportunities arise.

Throughout the observation, the child being observed will be referred to as child A in order to adhere to the child protection policy in place at my current setting. Furthermore, to be able to gain detailed information on the child in question, I shall use ‘child X’ to represent other children and ‘P’ for practitioners, who make a contribution during the observation.
