MINI DEBATE GUIDE
Rationale:
Mini debates require collaborative process that are used in successful business ever day. They help students develop INFORMATION LITERACY, DEEP READING, ORGANIZATION, CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM SOLVING PERSUASIVE WRITING AND PRESENTATION SKILLS.
A. Student steps in the mini debate process:
1st step: Students are formed into a debating team. The team compositions and debating team opponents are pre arranged by the Professor.
2nd step: The debating teams will, first, need to agree on the TOPICS for debate. Second, to agree whose team will take the role of PRO issue and CON issue.
3rd step: After , doing the 1st and 2nd steps, the students needs to seek the approval of the professor before doing the 4th steps.
4th step: Upon approval of the Topic and the team position, the team will do a research on the topic. The professor will monitor the completion of these task and grade them accordingly:
* Each member of the debating team should select at least 2 articles supporting their chosen issue. ( 20%)
* Each member of the debating team will select at least 3 facts and 3 expert opinions that support their side of the issue. (20%)
* Each debating team will have a collection of facts and opinions that are different from the other team. (10%)
* Each will copy / paste essential information and citations from selected article to a draft summary. (10%)
* Use the draft summary to organize and print note cards for your presentation. (10%)
* Each member of the debating team will have sufficient information for a 2 to 3 minutes presentation. ( 50%)
B. Mini debate sequence of activities:
This includes the presentations by each member of the debating team members and the opposing team members. You and your team members must also be prepared for a series of 3 Crossfires that gives you the opportunity to question each other between presentations.
