Managerial Decisions

Managers are faced with challenges that require difficult decisions that impact people’s lives in a positive or negative manner. For a company to stay in business and be successful, tough decisions are made when deciding which employees to terminate, promote and what image the company wants their employees to portray. Although these decisions are difficult to make, any deciding factors or policies should be presented upon the initial interview with the potential employee.

If a layoff must ensue, it can be hard to tell employees that a certain number of employees must be let go. It would be my decision as a manager to keep those employees with the best production rate, best absence rate, and best overall attitude. In a situation where a company has to downsize, seniority should not be the deciding factor on an employee keeping their job. Sure, everyone gets older and slows down, which happens to those employees with the most seniority; however, those same employees should be the continuity of the organization, not the weakest link. I would have no problem laying off the youngest employee or the oldest employee, but I would base that decision on a work weighted value. Whoever pulled the most weight and was efficient would remain employed.

Companies worldwide must face the decision of uniforms, business casual, or depend on the judgment of the employees to dress appropriately. I believe any well established company that is portraying a professional image must have an acceptable dress code. At the initial interview of a potential employee, the dress code must be address so that if the job seeker cannot meet the appearance demands of the company, they should apply at another establishment. If given an option of how to dress and told to use the employee’s best discretion, each individual employee would come dressed differently because everyone’s acceptable appearance discretion varies from person to person.
