Introduction Scenario

Walmart serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 9,826 retail units under 60 different banners in 28 countries. With fiscal year 2010 sales of $405 billion, Walmart employs 2.1 million associates worldwide (Walmart Corporation). A refined and successful process of installing, training and utilizing touch screen cash registers will be implemented into each store to enhance speed of check out and inventory maintenance.

One of the largest complaints of Walmart shoppers is the time it takes to check out. Walmart expects the customer to do all of its shopping in one location, resulting in overflowing baskets of items to be checked out. Walmart currently utilizes laser barcode readers, more accurate to ring up sales and minimizes the number of transactions that would have to be keyed manually. This technology has helped to enhance the check-out progress. Walmart customers will avoid doing one stop shopping if check out is equal to the time it took to browse the store. The corporation must find a way in which to incorporate this laser fast reading into a complete speedy check out.

Maintaining inventory is essential to the bottom line of the Walmart Corporation. Due to the large number of brands and items carried by the Walmart Corporation inventory check can be time consuming. The Walmart Corporation is seeking new technology that can monitor inventory from the inventory truck to the customer’s hands. Walmart thrives on the ability to meet all of the customer’s needs as well as remain on the edge of technology and competitions.

Action Plan

It is very important that the training of the new systems be effective yet the least time consuming possible so we have devised a strategic training plan for all Walmart employees.
