In Week two of MGT 230, the class learned about the steps in the planning process and factors that affect that process. We also learned how organizational responsibility and ethics affect the planning process. The following paragraphs will summarize the content from this week’s class.

There are six steps in the planning process. First is situational Analysis, the planners gather, interpret, and summarize all information past, present, and future relevant to the current issue. Second is to come up with alternative goals and plans, planners will use the information gathered in the situational analysis step and formulate creative alternative goals and plans. Third is goal and plan evaluation, managers will evaluate the alternative goals and plans and eliminate ones that do not work and prioritize plans that will work. Fourth is goal and plan selection, managers will pick the best goal or plan for the situation. Fifth is implementation; this is putting the goal or plan into action. Everyone must fully understand the goal or plan for it to function properly. Sixth is to monitor and control, this requires evaluating the work being done against the goals and taking necessary corrective actions to ensure it is working properly or if the situation changes.

In the discussions, we believe every step in the process is valuable to the final plan. Situational analysis step is a crucial step in the process. Past, Present, and future events must be analyzed to understand the problem completely. The plan requires proper analysis for success. Implementation is an important step in the process. No matter how good a plan is that if not executed properly it is destined to fail. Communication of the plan ensures that everyone is on the same page and is working toward the same goal.
