Social Development

The article I chose was The Need for Social-Psychological Research to Overcome a “National Embarrassment” in Mental Health. The reason I chose this article is because I felt like it took a different view of social development and mental health than what I have seen this week. Its main objective was to state how so many Canadians do not agree with the diagnosis of a mental illness yet many of them have a mental illness. It should how less likely they are likely to tell anyone they have one but will more than likely mention a family member having cancer over admitting mental health issues. I also felt like the article targeted adults in Canada rather than just the teenagers and adolescents. The article states that most of mental illness in Canada at the time was the feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness for an individual. An individual most likely had some kind of mental health problem if they were dealing with a very stressful situation. The article states that many Canadians believe that a diagnosis of a mental illness is just an excuse for bad health. When I think about people who have had mental health issues that I have known have been said to just be looking for an excuse to get away with their actions instead of facing them like an adult. I might use this article if I was writing a research paper. It has a very different point of view that many of the articles I saw in the library but it is also has some statistics which makes it more of a reliable source for a research paper on social development. At the end of the article is talks about how there are groups in Canada trying to get people to understand that it isn’t an excuse but rather it could be a real mental problem if it is not treated or dealt with in the right wat.
