ABSTRACT

Nowadays, environmental protection is the hot issue in worldwide. Due to the global warning and climate change includes rising sea level and increasing the probability of extreme weather events, many countries are striving to reduce the waste and emission of greenhouse gases to the environment in order to mitigate the greenhouse effect.

Construction industry is the industry that produced most waste in Hong Kong. Almost one-fourth of solid waste disposed to landfill was the construction waste (Refer to Appendix 1). The existing three landfills will be full between 2014 and 2018. Thus, Hong Kong government is striving to reduce the solid waste in Hong Kong. Comparing to countries and cities that are making green buildings compulsory or giving away monetary incentives to achieve the goal, Hong Kong is slightly held back in its pace as far as green architecture is concerned. Clear policy direction is yet to be developed. The initial costs for erecting green buildings are more expensive, many local developers are thus taking a wait-and-see stance as there lacks a predisposition from the market or the policy.
