Schools should teach comprehensive sexual education because it is more effective than abstinence only programs. In today’s world it is impossible for us to keep sex out of our children’s lives. They see it on TV. They hear about it from school peers. The consequences of choosing to not teach our children safe practices will include sexual transmitted diseases, personal angst, and unwanted pregnancies. It is time for us to try a new approach. We need a change in the educational system to see a change in our children.

A major concern in the topic of teaching sexual education in schools is that it will cause an increase in sexual behavior. To teach safe practice is not telling a teen that you’re giving them permission to have sex. It is simply taking a more effective approach to protecting them. Knowledge is power. Teenagers are just as human as adults and have the same natural urges. In 2001 the U.S. had the highest rate of teen pregnancies amongst most industrialized nations (Chappell, 2010). These stats support that teenagers are already sexually active, without us putting the idea into their heads. It is time to approach our children more open mindedly. When our children start to ask us about having sex, a response of abstinence is their only option is not going to be taken seriously by them. Teenagers will say we just don’t understand and will lose interest in coming to adults for advice. Imagine being the mother of a fifteen year old girl. Your daughter has her first boyfriend. He’s eighteen and tells her he loves her. It is so very important to have good communication with your daughter right now! All too often these older teenage boyfriends are known to lie to our daughters, just to convince them to have sex with them. Shortly after, he just might break her heart. Teaching girls to wait can save this heart break. It’ll take a lot of strength to say no to him but if he breaks up with her because of her choice she will feel so proud of herself and have...
