1 Executive Summary

As observed in this case study, the organisation experienced a multitude of problems. The bulk of which were behavioural issues. Communication can be seen as the major shortfall between all people in the organisation and this includes: project team members, top management and functional managers. The main cause of this problem can be seen through non collaborative and non cohesive team work. The inability to communicate effectively resulted in conflict with the end result being scope creep and budget overruns. Entrenched in the organisational culture, the authors observed a non willingness to develop staff by top management and functional managers.

The inadequate operational strategy was observed as the second biggest contributor to the organisation’s failure. Inconsistencies were seen in the way in which staff was assessed in terms of skills and work load. The organisation accepted high unmitigated risks, which can be seen by lack of interest in their customers, staff and project budgets by all organisational stakeholders. Top leadership did not provide clear direction in the entire organisation. The projects alignment to the organisation’s objectives was neither defined nor prioritised.
