Assignment: Case Analysis of Change Management at ICICI

Case Synopsis

Mr. Kamath entered into the ICICI as the change leader whose change endeavors were faced with resistances from within the organization. These resistances were overcome with various measures designed and implemented to help employee adapt to changes. Changes are inevitable but leaders make change happen for the best of an organization which needs dedication, persistence and implementation of adequate change programs.

Facts of the Case

The facts presented in the case are related to the ICICI Bank which saw various organizational changes in mid-1990s and in the end of 2000 under the leadership of Mr. Kamath to make ICICI a one-stop shop for financial services in the mid-1990s such as: a) Creation of different groups; c) Set up of three new departments to decrease the operations time and to retain its customers; and d) Appointment of representatives in each department to contact with concerned customers and merger between ICICI and BOM (Bank of Madura) which differed in size, profiles, and other aspects. These changes faced various problems or resistances like dissatisfaction and fear of zonal offices, and complain regarding the lack of system to develop right people and the employee feedback system. Distortion of compensation packages between the competing divisions was present. There was fear and anxiety on the side of BOM employees.

In order to address these resistances and issues, Mr. Kamath implemented the programmes such as the training programs, Graduates’ Management Training Programme (GMTP) of two years, introduction of group performance reward system, and 360 degree appraisal system. To solve the resistances of...
