Final Draft of This I Believe
I believe in exposure. Exposure is experience and from experience you acquire knowledge and with knowledge you can accomplish anything and everything. One that lives their life in a bubble never gets to come in to contact with the outside, and in the end they never learn or their lack of exposure would cause extreme detriment to their well being.
Exposure to bacterium is a necessity to a healthy immune system. In the early years of living, when the immune system is building itself, it is important that the body is exposed to different pathogens so that the immune system can familiarize itself with it, fight it, and become immune to it.
My mother had an extreme phobia of germs. She made sure that I was kept safe from the evils of bacteria so that I could escape the dangers of contracting a disease. As a young child I wasn’t allowed to set foot outside of my house. I was to wash my hands after any contact with an outside source and bathe in the Germ X. My mother actually created an impenetrable force field of Lysol in our house. If a bacterium looked at our house wrong it would fall flat and die. After my mother’s marriage to my stepfather, my life turned around. My stepfather gave me the freedom to venture out into the great outdoors in hopes to save my immune system. But it was too late; my immune system hadn’t had the time to grow accustomed to bacteria so it was weak. Every year I face my seasonal sickness, and I always catch the same illness about five to seven times a year. My sister and brother never experience this problem because from the time they left the womb they’ve been living life hand in hand with nature. Brooke, my sister, used to run in the buff, roll in the dirt, stuff snails in her pockets, and eat anything and everything she set her eyes upon. My brother had quite a few grotesque encounters with nature. He would be the one to crawl into our pond to urinate and he would lick the bottoms of turtles...
