Syllabus Description:

Students will choose and research a family member’s or friend’s textile, clothing, or accessory artifact that is considered an heirloom (ex., wedding gown, military uniform, prom dress, christening gown, quilt, etc.). Besides documenting the physical characteristics of the artifact, the student will interview the current owner(s)/original possessor(s) of the artifact for its history, significance, circumstance, and overall “story”. Students will also research and report on the time period that the artifact originated as well as discuss the proper manner in which the heirloom should be stored and maintained in order to preserve it for future generations. This project is designed to give students a greater appreciation for historical artifacts as well as introduce them to the role of a costume historian.

1. Find/choose an artifact that is considered an heirloom. Make sure you handle the artifact with care!

2. Document the physical characteristics of the artifact. Include the following:

a. Style description including trim, silhouette, findings used, and garment details:

Old Victorian style velvet dressed with peter pan collar, white pearl style buttons down the top, the arms are short sleeve with lace and pleated at the waist

b. Materials used including fiber content, metals, plastics, etc:

100% cotton with velvet ,12 Plastic buttons and lace.

c. Document the written content of any garment labels or tags.
