Final Project Overview and Timeline
Final Project Overview
The final project provides you with an opportunity to synthesize your learning about the history of money. You will apply the knowledge you have gained about the roles of money—as matter, means, and measure—to a movie plot and its characters. Select a movie from the following list. If you want to evaluate a movie other than those on the list, you must obtain permission from your instructor during the first week of class. As you watch the movie, look for instances where money serves as a matter, a means, or a measure. Look for historical, sociopsychological, or economic aspects of each of these roles in the movie. Pay attention to how money influences the plot and characters of the movie.
Movie List
Wall Street (1987)
Trading Places (1983)
The Sting (1973)
Boiler Room (2000)
Ocean's Eleven (1960) (2001)
Ocean’s Twelve (2004)
Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
Casino (1995)
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre (1948)
American Psycho (2000)
Rat Race (2001)
Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
The Italian Job (1969) (2003)
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
Brewster’s Millions (1985)
Your final project will be a 1,400- to 2,100-word paper that addresses the roles of money in your chosen movie. Each role will have its own section in your paper and you will draw conclusions on the overall influence money has on the characters and plot of the movie.
The following are suggested questions, organized by topic, which should help you in your movie analysis. As stated in the syllabus, you do not need to address each question explicitly. They are intended to help organize your ideas and analysis.
• Matter:
o Does money function as a physical matter in the movie? In what ways? What influence does this have?
o What money matters do the characters face? How well do they deal with these matters?...
