Case: Pet Care Veterinary Services

This case explores some of the difficulties that arise when running a service-based operation with limited human resources. It forces students to perform objective analysis and try to balance very difficult issues

1. What are the challenges facing MacIntyre?

• Lack of employee motivation, may be caused by differences between employee’s personal goal and the company’s goal

• Increasing hours worked at both locations due to the above reason

• Theft in medical supplies, which may be hazardous depending on the situation

2. What does she need to do to ensure that PetCare continues to be a successful business?

• MacIntyre needs to stop treating Saltzman with the luxury he is currently given, since Saltzman did not pass the VRIO test, he is not considered a competitive advantageous resource. MacIntyre should be proper procedure to either motivate Saltzman through rewards or coercive actions, or find a suitable replacement, and given enough time for proper integration.

3. What does she want to do?

• MacIntyre has developed four options, leave the current practice alone and see where the business ends up, discipline Saltzman or offer him a personal stake in the business, and sell off the Avery locations.

4. What can she do?

In this situation, not much of MacIntyre’s option is viable. If she waits and do nothing, she will soon experience burn-out from the intensive stress of operating both Avery and Johnsonville location, this could potentially jeopardize operation at Johnsonville. If she offer Saltzman a stake, this will give Saltzman more power than what he is given now, which he may be abuse to his benefit and not the clinic’s. One action he may do is hiring an assistant vet to lower his workload while still receiving high compensation from the company; however, this can be done without giving Saltzman stake in the company as well as keeping him on high pay roll.
