Overview
Christian Counselors play a very vital part to the healing process for those that they are counseling. The counselee place a great amount of hope in the counselor that they will be able to guide them to the place where they are able to move past their situations and find happiness. In How to help people change, by Jay Adams, and Telling yourself the truth, by William Backus & Marie Chapian, both authors believe place emphasis on Scripture, and the use of the Word of God to bring peace and wholeness to those individuals seeking help from a Christian counselor.
Adam’s Four Step Biblical Process
The basis for Adams’ model comes from the use of 2 Timothy 3: 16 (Adams, 1986). Adams model uses the scripture as an outline that every Christian counselor should follow. Adams believes that his model is truly the only model that a counselor can effectively counsel from. One flaw with this model is he believes that this model is the only acceptable way to bring about change in the counselee (Adams, 1986).
Adams held a high regard for Scripture. It is true that the scripture is inspired by God and is ultimately the greatest truth ever known to man. The problem with Adams work is he does not see the value of truths that can be found outside of the Word of God, that have proven to be beneficial to the counseling process. Adams states, “if it is a truth that is necessary to counseling, it will be found already in a purer form in the Bible (Adams, 1986). The Bible is without a doubt one of the greatest books when looking for answers to life’s problems. It is so important to realize that there will be times when you will have to go beyond the Bible, and look for outside sources to help with those issues that come up during a counseling session.
