The Power Of Will

Surviving is a skill, which is commonly used in today’s society. A great example is real life TV shows in which people struggle to survive because of limited amount of supplies. Viewers from all over the world find games like that amusing. However when a real life situation occurs it is not a game. Surviving requires many importantly skills such as intelligence, determination, reasons for not giving up most importantly the ability to stay calm and collected. Therefore, it may seem like fun and games on TV but when trapped alone in the wilderness it becomes a game of smarts.

The key to surviving in the wilderness is determination and will power.

The novels Brian’s Winter, Hatchet, and The River are all great stories about survival. These boys are able to survive because they are all determined to live. Also their memories of loved ones motivate them to persevere. Most importantly the boys are smart and are able to use their intelligence to make use of the resources around them. With out these assets, the boys would undoubtedly die in the wilderness.

Determination is the key to survival. “Qualities of character and resolve usually dictate the chances of survival. Physically

unprepared individuals with no equipment or specialist skills have survived against all the odds by refusing to surrender to death. The survivor will cling to the last threads of life.” (Stables, Rod. www.rgs.org).

In the novel Brian’s Winter, the main character meets a lot of obstacles as “[A] moose was crushing him, and with all of his power he moved out from under the massive animal.”(Paulsen 66) Brian was determined to win the battle with the moose and therefore he does. The battle leaves Brian with many wounds and what he thinks is a broken rib, but Brian is determined not to give up.
