Treasureable Literacy Memories

Learning to read and write at Jefferson Elementary was a very exciting and memorable experience for me. Along with learning literacy, I was surrounded my new and old friends. Looking back, I find it very exciting that some of my peers whom I learned to read and write with were some of the same people who I graduated high school with. These people still mean a lot to me, as well as two important people who opened my eyes to the basics of literacy; my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Edgar and my first grade teacher, Mrs. Juehring. These two women were caring, kind, and great teachers. I feel that they did a phenomenal job of teaching my classmates and I vocabulary, grammar basics, proper spellings, etc.

When first beginning to read and write, I remember being taught “The Alphabet Song.” Every morning at school, after reciting The Pledge of Allegiance, our teacher had all of us sing our ABC’s. During this year of school, I remember also working on both recognizing and writing capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet and learning each letters’ sounds. Our teacher would write them out on the chalkboard to demonstrate for us, as well as call us up to the board one at a time to write the next letter in alphabetical sequence.

Our school also provided us with workbooks, which we used to trace letters, as well as freehand them afterwards. I remember Mrs. Edgar walking around the room, complimenting on our work and giving us advice on how we could improve. I also remember her as being very upbeat, compassionate, and caring to the students in her class. She always seemed to be smiling and was great at taking time with individual students, when needed, to help them better their writing skills.

I have more memories of reading experiences from first grade rather than kindergarten, as well as many writing experiences and activities. Mrs. Juehring was a very friendly woman, always thinking of ways...
