How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, “It’s a myth” mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.
According to dictionary.com myth is defined as a “ traditional or legendary story. The word myth is used in the academic context by addressing what is real and what is fake. The word myth is used popularly through stories and legends told throughout society. It’s funny how much these stories become a part of our real life. Whether were watching a science fiction movie or reading a book with mystical characters. Some traditional and legendary stories such as St. Nick, Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, stork, and the tooth fairy to name a few. These myths were created to minimize real life for young children. For instance, it’s easier to say that a stork comes down and gives mommy and daddy a baby, rather explaining the real truth in detail. Myths to me are like fairytales, we all wish they were true, but we know that such a life does not exist.
Why do myths from different cultures around the world address such similar or universal themes? Think about how myths explain the unknown and the tribulations of mankind.
