In Massachusetts the winter of 1891 it was too cold for outdoor games. Dr. James Naismith, a gym teacher, decided to invent a game his students could play indoors. The new game was played with a soccer ball but kicking was not allowed. Although the game is usually played indoors it can also be played outdoors or anywhere a basket can be set up. The fact it can be played inside or out makes it a year around sport. Since the game requires no other equipment besides a ball and a basket, it’s easy to set up. It’s the most popular sport among players of all ages in cities suburbs and all around the world.

Basketball was born. Players had to throw catch and jump. They scored points by throwing the ball into a peach basket while Dr. Naismith had asked the janitor to nail it on the balcony of the gym. The basket was ten feet off the ground. The team that scored the most points was the winner. Basketball is a fast-paced game played by 2 teams of 5 players each. There was no radio or television in 1891. People learned about basketball by seeing or playing it. Men who played basketball taught it to others. The first women’s game took place in 1892 at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA where Dr. Naismith had invented men’s basketball. Word of this new game spread quickly. Teachers in schools and YMCAs around the country taught the game to their students. By 1895 people all across the U.S. were playing basketball. From its beginnings, basketball was as popular with women as it was with men.  The most useful elements about basketball are the life lessons it teaches you, general fun, and becoming a great player.

Basketball is a fun sport to play if you understand the game and what is going on. It is so much each player can do. You could be on the other side of the court and still contribute to a point or a win for the team. Basketball is a mind game when two really good coaches and teams go head to head.
