The current situation in Sri Lanka can simply be described as chaos. There has been ongoing between the government and the Tamil Tigers for a long time and it is estimated that over 70,000 people have been officially listed as killed in the war since 1983. Basically, the Tamil Tigers are a separatist armed organization who fights for the creation of an independent state named Tamil Eelam on the north and east parts of the island.

From the presentation of Sri Lanka’s colonial history, geography and economy, it is apparent that the conflict has caused significant harm to the population, environment and severe damage to the economy of the country. This was substantiated in the video, where we saw King, a Tamil journalist. When he was just four years old, his family home was burned to the ground in a kind of Sinhalese Buddhist pogrom against the Tamils. King turned out to be a keen guide, but his childhood stories reflect those of many children in Sri Lanka. The video also showed that the Tamil Tigers have twice attacked Colombo's only skyscrapers, the twin-towered World Trade Center. They've also killed one Sri Lankan president, blinded another, and assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. This would definitely have a negative effect on the population economically, environmentally, physically, and mentally.

The presentation on the Tamil Tigers and their leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran showed us what caused them to act the way they do. The Tamil ethnic group, who are mostly Hindu, were mistreated by the majority Sinhalese, who are mainly Buddhist. When the Buddhist Sinhalese-dominated government did not meet Tamil civil rights demands, the Tamil people began to fight. The video showed us how this Tamil retaliation has escalated to ridiculous proportions, which has made them one of the world's most known terrorist groups, and as they fight for their land, the Tigers have carried out more suicide bombings than Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Al Qaeda combined.
