When analyzing the response from Tim in this Case, I found that many inconsistencies of personal management skills that Tim could have called upon to assist him with the issues he had been faced with. It is critical for project managers to have efficient processes and smooth relationships, which ultimately create opportunity for successful projects and efforts for the team and for management. Having team members personally commit to the project’s success gives the project manager the greatest chance of achieving the goals and/or objectives of the division in which he supports. Therefore, in the case, I would encourage Tim take some time to analyze human behavior in order that he better understand his leadership skills, conflict resolutions skills and team building skills necessary to encourage team members to become more motivated and committed to his project’s success.

One of the prime responsibilities of the project manager is using his leadership skills and having the ability to lead his team (“drinking the cool-aide”). In the case, where Tim stated he has continually asked his people to come to him if they are having problems, it is apparent that his request could not get his people to communicate with him more. Considering that Tim undertook this position three months ago, one factor to consider is that Tim either has an issue with general leadership skill dealing with his support personnel, or the other factor could involve personal values and conflicts of team members, often attributed to the “changing of the guard”, where new managers have a different sense of values from that of the older, and/or more experienced manager. Either factor considered, Tim’s lack of personal experience and credibility within the organization, let alone within his team, has perpetuated his ineffectiveness as a project manager, therefore, further adding to the...
