When communicating in today’s workplace there are a lot of different ways of communicating than our colleagues of thirty years ago and even ten years ago. Thirty years ago companies had to rely on verbal communication as their main means of communication. Since there was no email, instant messaging, or text messaging, the only option was to phone someone if you were not in the same office of. Individuals needed to have excellent verbal communication skills and be comfortable talking to someone face to face. Even ten years ago as email and instant messaging was still being used as a secondary form of communication you still had to possess strong verbal skills because you were still dealing with workers who were not accustomed to using this form of communication. In today’s work environment nearly ninety-five percent of your fellow employees are knowledgeable of using non-verbal communication. Communication is essential in any work environment, whether you work as an accountant, lawyer, or even a factory worker. Everyone has to be able to communicate using your company’s primary choice of communication, and you must be able to interpret and communicate back or you will be stuck without information that is necessary to performing your job to your company’s standards.

In my current position with my company, communication is extremely important for the success of our company. Since I am a client specialist for one of my company’s larger accounts, I have to be in direct contact with our client on a daily basis. The contact is a combination of different types of communication styles. I will communicate with my counterpart at the company’s corporate office first thing in the morning with a detailed report of calls taken from
