Theory Critique-Crabb and Hawkins
Sarah Williams
Liberty University
In my paper I will critique the difference and similarities between Crabb’s and Hawkins. They both have an approach that I will compare and share my opinion of the two approaches.
Hawkins’ model has concentric circles are steps in the system that shape us and our personality to become who we are. The circles are the core self, soul, body temporal systems and supernatural systems. They all have their own meaning the innermost self that represents the core self that is IOG (Image of God), sin and spirit. The second circle has to deal with thinking, feelings and emotions. This circle is the transformation stage. Physical body is your third in our life relationships change and so do we and how we deal with the changes. In the temporal systems circle are: family, friends, church, society, government, economy, and education. This system shapes us and how we think about God. In the supernatural systems circle are: God (trinity), good angels, demons or bad angels, and Satan. It’s the good and evil we all have in our selves.
In the reading Crabb also talks about personality. He talks about conscious minds and unconscious minds. Conscious minds include such things as the memories, feeling and fantasies. The unconscious mind is where we store repressed memories.
. Hawkins has grid that is used to make sure treatment is on the right track. Phase one is listening and understanding. Phase two tracks the story and makes a plan of action. Phase three is the formulation of a plan of action and the client takes the ownership for implementation for both parties involved. Phase four is the client commits to a community like in his circles the temporal stage.
“Dr. Larry Crabb’s (1977) approach to integrating theology and psychology is called
"spoiling the Egyptians" (p 47). His approach is tries to screen out any secular
psychology which is not compatible with biblical principles...
