The law of the Land

Throughout history some civilizations were more likely to succeed that all the others. Some say its geographical luck, others say it’s just the people had the right mind set. One thing that they Greece will be most remembered for is there role in creating democracy.. Even though they did not practice it perfectly, there is no doubt they didn’t have any fundamental set up contributing towards it. Over 2400 years ago, the famous Greek general, Pericles, said, "It is true that we (Athenians) are called a democracy, for the administration is in the hands of the many and not the few, with equal justice to all alike in their private disputes." Only in Athens, and only for a short time, "rule by many" meant that all citizens had to be willing to take an active part in government. That was the law. Each year, 500 names were drawn from all the citizens of Athens. Those 500 citizens had to serve for one year as the law makers of ancient Athens. All citizens of Athens were required to vote on any new law that this body of 500 citizens created. One man, one vote, majority ruled. Women, children, and slaves were not citizens, and thus could not vote. So in total of course there democracy wasn’t practiced perfectly. Greece also leaves behind wonderful architecture that you can see has an influence in our current day buildings. Philosophy which helped influences some of the more modern day philosophers. And of course there arts and literature were highly acknowledged as being some of the greatest of civilizations.

Rome as well leaves behind some great things. The romans were highly advanced in technology. There road based symptoms were years ahead of its time, and were designed with the utmost form of reliability. They advanced highly in modern medicine, even giving some of the first forms of medical welfare.
