Facing the Challenge of Change:

Steps to becoming an Effective Leader

In today’s fast paced competitive business world organizations are faced with the challenges of change. The article analyzes the steps necessary to effectively implement change and some of the challenges change can produce for organizations. Trybus talks about how leaders will have to “become reflective regarding how they can develop the skills necessary to meet the challenges of change both an organizational and individual point of view” (Trybus, 2011).

As organizations are required to realize demanding expectations for their customers and to remain competitive, “the ability to lead change has become a valuable skill” necessary for success (Trybus, 2011). The author poses that management must become change agents in order to keep up with the ever-changing environment. The article points out the preparation needed for a leader to become an effective change agent and the posing challenges that can stifle change within an organization.

The first step to effectively introducing a change within an organization is to know the organization, meaning what actions will be effective and supported by the organization to producing the desired change. The author talks about the requirement of management to create a vision that will take the organization “from what it is to what it will become” (Trybus, 2011). The vision, according to Trybus, must be a shared vision between management and their employees before it is ever implemented. “The vision helps to make the change more coherent, understandable, and valuable to the organization” (Trybus, 2011). Management does not want unintended negative effects on productivity so employee buy in is always crucial for a change to become reality and sustainable.
