There are many poorly written mission statements that businesses have adopted as their objective. When evaluating the quality of a mission statement, we should check for several key characteristics that makes the mission statement worthwhile. The mission statement that is noted above is from a bathroom and kitchen faucet manufacturer, but you probably would not have guessed that judging by the statement alone.
If fact, you could apply this “mission statement” to just about every publicly traded corporation in the world. The goals are generic and overwhelming obvious for any manufacturer. This attempt at a statement appears disingenuous and out of place, it does not appear to reflect the realities of the company it is meant for. There is nothing to substantiate this claim or explain how this goal is to be achieved.
The statement also lacks the attention grabbing qualities you would expect in a company’s motto. It does not inspire the employees nor does it describe the business to its customers. There is no sense of value that is conveyed by the statement other than the expected goal of trying to be the best in the industry. Although it is merely one sentence long, it manages to bore the reader because of the lack of compassion and compelling verbiage.
This mission statement fails to showcase the uniqueness of the company and the purpose for its existence. There appears to be a lack of emotion and spiritedness by American Standard as a result. I would be surprised if anyone in the entire organization is proud of this statement and feels it is the best mission statement for the company.
