Capstone Checkpoint (Week 9)

I am an African American woman raising four children in the Bronx borough of New York. I have lived in the Bronx for 25 years. The Bronx has many nice attractions such as the Bronx Zoo and Bronx Botanical Garden. Here in the Bronx the current diversity challenges we face within my community is that we have the lowest rate of Caucasians than any other borough in New York. I believe the reason Caucasians refrain from living in the Bronx is because it is known for having many areas where low income recipients reside as well as a high crime rate. Like any other community we have our share of problems such as gang violence amongst young gang members. We have the bloods (Black) against the Latin Kings (Hispanics).

The Bronx has a very diverse population which includes Hispanics, Dominicans, and African Americans. According to the 2010 Census Bureau 10.9% is non-Hispanic White, 30.1% non- Hispanic Black or African American, 53.5% of the Bronx’s population is Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin. As the data proves Hispanics are the majority within my community.

I personally believe that the following steps could be taken to promote diversity within my community. We should promote a social gathering through the media. We could call it the “Bronx Awareness Rally.” We could get several cabinet level speakers such as the Mayor, Governor, Bronx Borough President, and even the President of the United States. They could show slide shows of the beautiful landmarks, restaurants, shopping malls, and housing opportunities the Bronx has to offer. I believe this would change how people view my community.

I believe that the face of 2050 will look like a combination of ethnic groups. I feel this way because immigration will continue and people from all ethnic groups will continue to seek a better life and migrate to the United States for better opportunities as far as healthcare, better job and education.
