Introduction:

Jerry’s personality develops as the novel progresses and for a number of reasons. The events that take place from the time Jerry’s mother dies to the end of the novel influence his character, causing him to change. Conducting an analysis of Jerry’s personality as it develops with the progression of the novel provides an understanding of how specific events contribute to Jerry’s personality changes. Lessons learned about life and reasons why individuals should not disturb the universe are revealed towards the end of the novel, contributing to Jerry’s different outlook on life and the universe.

Conclusion:

Jerry’s personality develops throughout the novel. He begins the book as a quiet individual determined to go against the norm and be his own individual. His refusal to sell chocolate goes against his schools tradition, allowing Jerry to stand up for his own beliefs and what he felt was right and in turn his private life seemed no more and his entire world was disturbed. By the end of the novel, Jerry realizes going against the norm is not worth it as he was drawn into an unfair fight, not only against the vigils, but the entire school and ultimately himself.
