Perception

Does each and every one of us see the environment that he is in, in the same way? Well, it is very rare, but possible. For example, our place of work. We can hate our jobs for a lot of reasons that seems bad to us, but our co-workers can love it, just because they translate the same reasons in a good way for them. Some people hate working on weekends while others love it, because their getting paid more, for example, But if the money and the conditions are great all the co-workers will enjoy these jobs.

This is what perception means. “Perception is a process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment” (Robbins & Judge, 2010).

Perception is very important in the study of OB, just because people’s behavior in the job based on their perception.

So how can it be that people will look at the same thing, but translate it differently? We can answer this question by analyzing the factors that influence perception.

First of all, we are going to discuss factors of the perceiver. These factors have a lot of influence from the person character. A person can look at something differently due to his attitudes, motives, interest, experience and expectations. For example, at work, as we said before, some people can expect to get wages that much grater than they are receiving now, while others can be totally satisfied with what they are getting now, therefore, enjoying their job.

Second, Are the factors in the situation here we can see factors like: social settings, work settings, and time. Example, for this can be two employees working in the same company. While one suffering from a bad timing, for example, having hard periods in his life, therefore may blame the job, while the other is in a good normal timing, therefore happy with everything including his job.
