Will the incentive plan to reduce absenteeism succeed? Explain your opinion.

In my opinion, the incentive plan would probably work because it takes from what employees look to the most, which is their vacation time. Even though the employees have found a way to be compensated for their absences this was not the intention 10 years ago between the union and USA Motors. With this new incentive plan, this will bring a lot of opposition from the employees, but this company will have to go through this plan and hope in time the employees will accept this new plan. You need to remember that this is a large company that has over 8,000 employees, which most likely there will be some conflict over this new plan. It is mention in the textbook “the steps of designing a total rewards program should not go astray” (World at Work, 2007).

How much absenteeism is really under the employee’s control?

Well there are times when employees becomes ill or maybe have an accident occur which is not within the employees control. If there is an accident this falls under worker’s compensation. Workers’ compensation is designed to make sure that employees that are injured on the job are provided with fixed monetary awards that will eliminate the need for litigation. If there is a serious illness that can cause chronic absenteeism that will fall under the FMLA which is The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, there are 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

If an employee work on a part-time schedule. FMLA can be used for a newborn, adoption and the placement of a foster child in your home (World at work, 2007). These are absenteeism beyond control.

Why didn’t the paid absence plan work?.

The company put this program in place but they never had the real focus on the issue and they were...
