II. Central University

(Fitzgerald. Business Data Communications and Networking, 10th Edition. John Wiley & Sons).

As a network manager for Central University I’m responsible for ensuring that communication between different buildings of this organization is working efficiently. Taking into consideration the fact that University consists of several different departments that are spread among several different buildings different subnets must be created. In this particular case we need to create a network between three buildings with popular colleges with large amount of users, one building with less amount of users and ten another buildings used for e.g. library, finance, maintenance etc. Each department would have its own subnet with certain type of IP addresses so that all computers on the same area network would have similar address. Because this University has the 128.100.xxx.xxx address range on the Internet it would require assigning all the computers in the same LAN with numbers that start with the same first three digits. Consequently, subnet in each of the colleges or departments would result in addresses such as e.g. 128.100.xxx.xxx where x would represent each individual computer number assigned to it and to a given subnet. It is important to ensure that no two computers have the same address.

In order to provide fast communication between subnets I would suggest using a subnet mask as it determines what addresses belong to a given subnet. Because this network will be working with different departments we must also install gateways- commonly called routers. Routers would route messages addressed to computers outside of its subnet.
