Part I

La Crosse is a beautiful town with many beautiful houses. Some houses are more pricy than others. Many houses are in the millions like the Victorian Home architecture and Queen Anne Style architecture. These houses were built many years ago, resulting in the values of these houses to be higher than the new ones built. Today, Lacrosse has are many new developed sections throughout the city, however, most of the new houses are Ranch style.

One of the most beautiful historian houses in La Crosse city is the Hixon House, which is a beautiful authentic Victorian home. The term Victorian houses refer to any houses built during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. Many Wisconsin preservationists and historians have walked through the Hixon House and marveled at the history that remains in this La Crosse house.

This Italianate-style Hixon House was constructed during 1858 by lumber baron Gideon Hixon. The house was remodeled numerous times and several additions were built from the late 1850s. This Italianate house features beautiful gorgeous woodwork, opulent interior decoration, and an abundance of local wood including a walnut entry, oak and birch parlor, and stunning cherry

The Gideon Hixon home stayed in the family until it was donated to La Crosse in 1962. According to the site “when the Hixons turned the house over to the historical society, the house had been intact and unchanged for the last 40 years,” ( Hixon House, La Crosse Historic Site. (n.d.).)

These have been preserved much as it was after its last remodeling and redecoration around 1900. Furthermore, remodeling was necessary to keep updating for meeting the current standard code. For examples: plumbing, mechanical, and electrical work.
