What makes for a good boss? I personally believe that is all in the eye of the beholder or employee if you will. I have had both good and bad in my work experience, more bad than good. To me what makes for a good boss/employer is someone that wishes to see you succeed and become skilled enough to take their place in their absence. Another quality is when they can talk to you like a civilized human being and not some worthless sack. What it takes to be a poor employer well there are too many things to list. It is strange that it is easier to find fault instead of greatness.

One employer I had that I felt was a great boss was a man I trained under when I was laying floors. My first day working for him he looked at me and said if in a year you are not able to take my job from me then I have failed you. Grant it he could be held solely responsible if I was capable of this but it was the best way to get the ball rolling. With one statement he had began a world of trust and friendship. Another thing that I learned and appreciated was that unlike other installers at five o’clock it was quitting time regardless. His belief was that a man that never sees his family is likely to become unhappy with his job and will let it show in his work.

Another boss that I had the pleasure of working under was my first chef at the country club. He renewed the belief in me that you should never ask someone to do something that you yourself are not willing to do. Which really can make a difference in the morale of the work place. The biggest thing I admired about him though was his skill of course but it was the fact that no one wait staff all the way up the chain to the board members were not allowed to address his staff about any problems regardless of what the issue might be. He believed that the issue at hand should be brought to him and he would handle the matter from there.
