Types of TV broadcasters

Community television

A service that offers programs locally-created and produced to reflect the community.

Conventional or traditional television (over-the-air)

Local television stations use transmitters to broadcast programming over-the-air. They are referred to as conventional or traditional television stations. Most of them offer programming that is of general interest (ex. information, sports and children programs, drama, movies, documentaries, commercial messages, etc.)

Educational television

A service that offers educational programming and whose operation is the responsibility of an educational authority.

Ethnic television

A station that devotes at least 60 per cent of its broadcast week to ethnic programs which means programs in any language that is specifically directed toward any culturally or racially distinct group, other than one whose heritage is Aboriginal Canadian, from France, or from the British Isles.

Native television

A service that offers programming that can be in any native Canadian language or in either or both of the two official languages, but should be specifically oriented to the native population and reflect the interests and needs specific to its native audience. It has a distinct role in fostering the development of aboriginal cultures and, where possible, the preservation of ancestral languages.

Pay per view television

An interactive “pay per program” service consisting mostly of movies and special events (ex. Viewer's Choice). The subscriber selects a program from the station's schedule and is charged for the purchase of that program only. Can only be received through a subscription with a distributor of television services (ex. cable, satellite, etc.)

Pay television

A service consisting mostly of movies (ex. The Movie Network, the Family Channel, etc.). Advertising is not allowed. Can only be received through a subscription with a distributor of television services (ex. cable, satellite, etc.)...
