For a computer to send data and information to other computers, and for the other computers to understand this data and information there has to be a set of rules for this communication process. The OSI Network Model or Open System Interconnection Model is a model that has these set rules so computers can communicate. The OSI model contains seven layers that are remembered by many people by remember the first letter of each layer to from the following phrase,” All People Seem to Need Data Processing”.

Each of these seven layers has its own unique function. Layer one of the OSI is called the physical layer; this layer defines the electrical and physical characteristics of the network. This includes the connectors, electrical characteristics of the signal, and defines how data and information travels through the network. Layer two is known as the data link layer, the date link layer is responsible for sending data to the physical layer so that it can be transmitted across the network. The data-link layer can perform checksums and error detection on the data to make sure that the data sent is the same as the data received (Harwood, 2010, p. 355). Layer three is the network layer; the network layer establishes data transfer paths throughout the entire network. If your network has a router this is the layer in which the router functions. Layer four is called the transport layer; the transport layer is just like it sounds it transmits data and information between hosts in a network. Another process that takes place in the transport layer is file fragmentation and their reassembly. Layer five, The Session layer controls communication between two hosts in a network. It does this by breaking, establishing and maintaining sessions on the network. Layer six is the presentation layer. The presentations layer’s basic function is to convert the data intended for or received from the application layer into another format. Such conversion is necessary because the way in...
